How to go from Frump to FABULOUS in Victoria BC
I have heard that one of the most challenging people to find when you relocate to Hollywood, is a GREAT Stylist. Transforming someone from Frump to Fabulous is a big challenge. These people are worth their weight in gold. They can transition just a simple plain ‘Jane’ into a voluptuous woman of style and grace. In Hollywood the whole idea is to get noticed. So part of the culture is knowing what to wear and how to wear it. Keeping in mind that every time you step out of your front door, the paparazzi are hiding behind every bush waiting to snap that ‘ever-so-famous’ picture of you looking your worst 🙁
This is what we call investing in yourself first. If you want to a part of ‘High Society’ then you need to know the rules going in.
So just to give you some idea as to how many award shows one should attend to be considered for the next block-buster movie. In the United States alone there are over 50 award shows annually, so now try to wrap your head around finding 50 different dresses to wear to all of these functions. It must be totally mind boggling trying to have the appropriate dress for that specific function coupled with the right pair of shoes, bag and then let’s not forget all that BLING.
A great stylist works within your budget and serves as your own personal shopper pulling together that perfect LOOK for your event. This is where you go from Frump to Fabulous in a few short hours. A stylist can be hired for a complete wardrobe overhaul or for just a special event. Either way, be prepared to spend some coin because these skilled professionals are worth it.
Stylists generally charge by the day or by the event, to help you look marvelous dahling. The Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, California is known for its amazing amenities and has on hand a Fashion Stylist ‘Joe Katz’ who works for its guests, or anyone else who needs help pulling a great look together. Joe’s fees range from $1,500 US for half a day to $2,100 US for a full day of fashion guidance.
After you have selected the stylist whom you want to work with, you need to send them your budget along with an image of yourself with detailed instructions on your event and style needs. Then you will have a 30 minute consultation with the stylist, just prior to getting that whole look pulled together. The talents of the stylist are that they have your measurements and they are connected in the world of fashion so that finding that perfect piece requires some work. The stylish will put together a multitude of looks from which you can select your favourite one. Keeping in mind that each piece you choose is a separate expense, because you are only paying the stylist for their advice.
However, if you are at all creative, then heading out to your local thrift store for a vintage gown is always a good option. Just remember not all vintage is gorgeous, there is also a lot of frump in vintage as well. Also, high end department stores like Nordstrom’s and Neiman Marcus do carry a wide selection of gowns for these kind of events with pricing that is mid range to high end.
These days many celebrities now just borrow designer gowns for a special event. That way they do not have to incur the exorbitant cost of purchasing a garment and it allows them to always have a fresh new look at each function. Rental fees can be as low as $100 plus your shipping, so it certainly is an affordable option to consider.
Now let’s talk about the hair style. Currently there are more than 1,000 Professional Hair Stylists in Los Angeles alone that are listed and very high end. Jose Eber is one of the most famous hair stylists to the stars, and at his salon in Beverly Hills he has up to 30 stylists available to wash, blow and dry your locks. Today the cost for a blow-dry is $75 and an updo can set you back $150 plus. But you will look gorgeous 🙂
Another trend-setter stylist is Ken Paves who has salons in Los Angeles and Michigan. His prices start at $75 for a blowout and then your colour will put you up in the $400 range. But we are not finished yet because we still have the tip.
So now we have the fabulous dress, the shoes, the bag the bling and we just had our hair done. But nothing is complete yet, without having our makeup applied professionally. A professional makeup artist will give you the look of sophistication and elegance needed to attend any celebrity event. They know how to use certain products that will have your makeup stay in place for many hours without applying it again. Mascara flakes on your cheek bones, runny eyeliner and an oily complexion are all the signs of a DIY project.
Professional Makeup Artists vary quite a lot in price. For the high end price you could pay $200 an hour and up to $1,500, depending on your wallet. However MAC Cosmetics, which I personally have been using for many years, offers up a fantastic option. If you schedule an appointment with a MAC aesthetician, they will work magic on your face as long as you spend a minimum purchase of $50. Not very hard to do with their extensive range of great products. This is quite the deal and something to keep in mind for your next gala event.
Well we are finally ready and now we need a vehicle – so where’s the limo? Paramount Limousine Services requires an eight hour minimum for any award show booking. Their fee for an eight hour rental with six passengers comes to $672 for a stretch. But they provide complimentary water, yeah or if you prefer the champagne package that will be an additional $25 plus the tax and that darn tip again. Either way it is an expensive evening and lifestyle to maintain.
So are we ready to have a blast or are we just so friggin exhausted from all the hard work and running around all day, that we are just going to put up our feet, have a cocktail and watch the award show on TV 🙂
Ah – the Life of the Rich and Famous!
